Parish Nurse pioneers recognized and blessed
By Margaret Payne-Chenard RN, PN
On Nov. 17 (2007) after two-and a-half-years of education and practicum, eight New Brunswick registered nurses received certificates of completion of the basic parish nurse preparation curriculum in a Service of Recognition and Blessing in the chapel of the convent of the Religious Hospitaliers of St. Joseph, Bathurst. Six dedicated and committed health committee members also received certificates.
* Editors note: Ada Lownds of St. Margaret’s in Fredericton died suddenly last week. She was a nurse by profession and, according to her obituary “discovered a name for the ministry she exercised throughout her married life - Parish Nursing, and she worked to help develop this practice.” It was she who planted the seeds of Parish Nursing in her parish, which in turn defined the ministry for the other Anglican parishes in this diocese.

Sister Mary, who wore a habit, worked for a home health agency. One morning, when she was visiting homebound patients, she ran out of gas along the way. As luck would have it, there was a gas station just a block from where he car stopped. She walked back to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her the station's only gas can was out with another customer, but he said she was welcome to wait for its return. He didn't think it would be more than half an hour.
The nun was anxious to get to her next patient's home so she walked back to her car to look for something else she could fill with gas. All she could find was the bedpan she planned to deliver to a patient later in he day.
She took the bedpan back to the station, filled it with gas, and carefully carried it back to her car.
As she poured the gas into her tank two men came out of a building across the street. As they watched her one said to the other: "If it starts, I'm goin' back to church!"
