New deacons a blessing to church and community
by Ana Watts
The Feb. 1 service at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton that celebrated the ordination of Debra Edmondson and Eleanor Dryden to the Vocational Diaconate belonged to these women. Their families, friends and the Anglican community rejoiced with them as they were consecrated by Bishop Claude Miller to the servant ministry of the deacon and its ministry of love in their parishes and communities. Debra and Eleanor demonstrated their ministry immediately by sharing their day with the Diocesan Diaconate Commission.

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding: be present with those who take counsel at Diocesan Synod in Saint John in June 2009 for the renewal and mission of our parishes, diocese and your Church in this place and beyond. As your disciples, teach us in all things to seek first your kingdom to your honour and glory. Guide us to what is right and grant us both the courage and patience to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

50 Refugee Families Project
The first of 50 refugee families to be sponsored by Anglican parishes throughout Canada during PWRDF's 50th anniversary celebrations is from Columbia, and the members of that family will make a home in Edmonton, Alberta. It's a chilly time of year to arrive in Edmonton, but a warm welcome is guaranteed for the family of three — mother, father and 16-year-old daughter.
Other refugee families are waiting for sponsors to help them resettle to Canada. PWRDF is particularly looking for sponsors in Toronto, Vancouver, Prince Albert and Calgary for ethnic Karen refugees from Burma (Myanmar), who have been living for many years in refugee camps in Thailand.
If your parish, no matter where it is, is interested in sponsoring a refugee family, or if you would like more information about this life-changing ministry, please contact Carolyn Vanderlip,<canderlip at pwrdf.org>.

A Wake Up Call to the People of God

by Archbishop Peter Akinola

Church of Nigeria web news
Feb. 10, 2009

Leaders of the Anglican Communion have gathered in a place that is rich with history and a powerful reminder of the glorious heritage that we all share. Egypt is the place that provided respite for the Holy Family when they faced persecution. Egypt is the place from which God led his people through the Red Sea to the land of promise. Egypt is the place where God took his people out of slavery into freedom. Egypt is a reminder that time after time God met His people at the point of their need. Here in this historic city of Alexandria, we are reminded of the great Church fathers, Origen (c.185 - c.254) and Athanasius (298–May 2, 373) and several others who risked their lives to give us the creeds and many foundational doctrines of the Church. Stewardship Quotable

Planned Giving
"Planned Gifts bring meaning to life. They represent a concrete expression of what a person feels their life has been about. The planned Giving ministry is very sacred — and usually very pastoral. Many donors feel that arranging a Planned Gift is part of the unfinished business they must complete to be at peace as the later years approach. By  helping donors to make this gift we become agents of peace to them. "

Heavenly Humour

A golfer in his golden years longed to play one hole at Pebble Beach, California the way the pros do — he wanted to drive the ball over the water and on to the green on a spit of land that juts from the coast. The duffer traveled to the course every year and played it dozens of times. His ball always fell short and was lost to the ocean, so he gave up using new balls.

On his most recent trip he arrived at the fateful hole, teed up an old ball and said a silent prayer. He was about to swing when a powerful voice from above said, "Wait … Replace that old ball with a new one."

He thought his prayer was about to be answered, so he replaced the old ball with a new one and again stepped up to the tee.

Again the voice stopped him" "Wait, step back and take a practice swing."

He followed the instructions, anxious to do whatever was necessary to help him fulfil his life-long ambition.

Yet again the voice stopped him: "Take another practice swing."

He stepped back and swung again.

Silence.

Finally the voice spoke again: "Put the old ball back on the tee."
