Synod 2009 a successful combination of generous spirit, careful planning and creative thinking

By Ana Watts

A generous spirit, careful planning and creative thinking made the 130th Synod of the Diocese of Fredericton successful in every way. A realistic agenda, professional technical support, thoughtful worship and study times, even a colourful backdrop designed especially for the event, combined to create a positive experience. Saint John even offered warm, sunny weather for the meetings held in harbourside Market Square at the Trade and Convention Centre.  Read the story.

Victime of violence in Guatemala

PWRDF asks you to please pray for Miriam Iquique, coordinator of the Ecumenical Women's Network (REM) in Guatemala, her husband and nine children, as well as for all those in Guatemala who are victims of violence. Miriam's son was recently kidnapped, some of her cousins were assassinated. Miriam herself has suffered two assaults and telephoned death threats. As Suzanne Rumsey, PWRDF coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean notes, "it is difficult to determine whether or not Miriam is being targeted for her organizing work among rural, Mayan Indigenous women, that is, whether these attacks are politically motivated. Nevertheless, those of us in PWRDF who have met and worked with Miriam are gravely concerned for her safety."

by Chris Herlinger

June 11, 2009

U.S. "mega-churches" - predominately large Protestant or Pentecostal churches, many without denominational affiliation - attract more younger and unmarried members than smaller and more established Protestant churches, a new study concludes. A survey issued on June 9 of 24,900 people who attend services at 12 U.S. mega-churches, found that almost two-thirds (62 percent) of those attending such institutions are under the age of 45, a sharp contrast to the 35 percent under 45 who attend all Protestant churches in the country.
