Bishops face cull demand at General Synod

The posts of dozens of bishops, archdeacons and cathedral deans could disappear under proposals for cuts in the Church of England to be debated next month. The General Synod, the Church’s parliament, will be asked to consider cutting the number of senior clergy in the established Church to bring them into line with falling clergy numbers. West Bank village sues developers in Montreal court

The Israeli-Palestinian dispute over land in the occupied territories has come to a Montreal courtroom this week. Lawyers for the West Bank village of Bil’in are suing developers Green Park International and Green Mount International, which are registered in Quebec, for building settlements on land that was confiscated from the village by Israel. Doom, Netherlands: The head of the World Council of Churches has warned of a backlash in Europe against migrants and refugees, after gains by anti-immigration parties in elections to the European Union parliament. "Sometimes the ordinary Christians in the pew are confused or even hostile to refugees who are often of a different race and colour. The backlash is not something that is happening 'out there'. It is also happening in the communities where most of us live," said the WCC general secretary, the Rev. Samuel Kobia. Read the story.

Canterbury, England: A Church of England bishop has launched a stinging attack on some members of the middle classes for consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in their comfortable homes and setting a bad example to working class youths roaming the streets of Britain. The Rev. John Gladwin, the Anglican bishop of Chelmsford, east of London, who has been outspoken in the past on binge drinking, made his comments after a government report showed that one in four adults in England are now classified as "hazardous" drinkers. Competition inspires fresh church music

How can we add new sparkle and life to Canadian church music? Members of the Anglican Foundation were mulling this over back in 2006, and decided to hold a competition for new musical settings to the Eucharist. The competition, launched in 2008, called for a simple, elegant setting for both congregation and choir. It was funded by the A.E.J. Fulford Trust, the foundation's only music-specific trust. Members of its advisory committee acted as judges. Read the story.

VIM set her up to teach animal anatomy and support church life in Uganda. What about a retired couple, passionate about organic farming?
