Primate focuses on mission at synod banquet

By Ana Watts

The church has no mission, Archbishop Fred Hiltz told New Brunswick Anglicans during Synod 2009. It is God who has a mission and it is the church’s responsibility to see it through. The primate of the Anglican Church of Canada was special guest speaker at the synod banquet held in the elegant new dining room at Rothesay Netherwood School in Rothesay. The focus of his address was the five marks of God’s mission.  Read the story.

PWRDF Partner Receives International Recognition
PWRDF recently learned that one of its partners in El Salvador, ADES (Association for Social and Economic Development, Santa Marta), was one of a group of Salvadoran organizations to receive the prestigious Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award.

Established by the U.S.-based Institute for Policy Studies, the award is named after the late Chilean diplomat, Orlando Letelier, and IPS staff member, Ronni Karpen Moffit, who were killed in 1976 in Washington D.C. by a car bomb planted by agents of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Since 1978 the award has honoured individuals and organizations throughout the Americas for their work to defend and promote human rights.

In its letter to the National Coordination on Mining in El Salvador (of which ADES is a founding member), the IPS recognized "the valour with which it undertook the struggle, in spite of all the challenges, to transform El Salvador into the first country to prohibit gold mining. This is a victory for rural communities and for the environment, helping to prevent the great devastation of open pit mines... the displacement of peasant communities and the enriching of corporations at the expense of the poor."

PWRDF joins other partners in congratulating ADES for its steadfast and persistent work of empowering local communities to defend and promote their human rights. ADES was the partner that made ceramic medallions for PWRDF's 40th anniversary and featured in the video "Strength of Many Hands".

The posts of dozens of bishops, archdeacons and cathedral deans could disappear under proposals for cuts in the Church of England to be debated next month. Kobia tells Dutch gathering Christians should welcome all faiths

Ecumenical News International
June 17, 2009

Doom, Netherlands: The head of the World Council of Churches has warned of a backlash in Europe against migrants and refugees, after gains by anti-immigration parties in elections to the European Union parliament. "Sometimes the ordinary Christians in the pew are confused or even hostile to refugees who are often of a different race and colour. The backlash is not something that is happening 'out there'. It is also happening in the communities where most of us live," said the WCC general secretary, the Rev. Samuel Kobia. Read the story.

British bishop says middle classes, some clergy, are binge drinkers
by Trevor Grundy
Ecumenical News International
June 17, 2009

Canterbury, England: A Church of England bishop has launched a stinging attack on some members of the middle classes for consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in their comfortable homes and setting a bad example to working class youths roaming the streets of Britain. The Rev. John Gladwin, the Anglican bishop of Chelmsford, east of London, who has been outspoken in the past on binge drinking, made his comments after a government report showed that one in four adults in England are now classified as "hazardous" drinkers.  Read the story.

Competition inspires fresh church music
by Ali Symons
Anglican Church of Canada
June 18, 2009

How can we add new sparkle and life to Canadian church music? Members of the Anglican Foundation were mulling this over back in 2006, and decided to hold a competition for new musical settings to the Eucharist. The competition, launched in 2008, called for a simple, elegant setting for both congregation and choir. It was funded by the A.E.J. Fulford Trust, the foundation's only music-specific trust. Members of its advisory committee acted as judges.  Read the story.

General Synod's Volunteers in Mission (VIM) program has sent unique people to unique places. How can an ordained veterinarian serve God overseas? Heavenly Humour

When Ted arrived at the football game, the first quarter was nearly over. "Why are you so late?" asked his friend Bob.

"I had to toss a coin to decide between going to church and coming to the game," replied Ted.

"How long could that have taken you?" Bob asked.

"Quite a while , I had to toss the coin 14 times!"
