New York: A new North American group claiming to embrace "traditional Anglican values" will not last long, the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop has predicted. Bishop Gene Robinson, an openly homosexual man living openly with a partner, whose 2003 consecration as bishop of the diocese of New Hampshire created a backlash among traditional believers within the U.S., church, told Ecumenical News International he does not believe the new Anglican grouping has long-term viability. Dead Sea Scrolls come to Canada

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto has unveiled a controversial exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which will run until Jan. 3. Concealed in desert caves near the Dead Sea for 2,000 years, the scrolls contain some of the oldest-known copies of biblical books as well as hymns, prayers and other writings. In the first three months of the exhibit, the ROM will display fragments of Genesis, Psalms and Daniel. From October to January, the exhibit will display fragments of Deuteronomy, Psalms and Isaiah. The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) elected its first archbishop and ratified a constitution and canons at its first Provincial Assembly in Dallas and Fort Worth, Tex. from June 22 to 25. Lutheran National Convention begins in Vancouver

Canadian Lutherans are gathering for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's (ELCIC) biennial National Convention, which will take place in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia campus from June 25 to 28. More than 400 delegates, staff and guests will participate in the convention meetings and worship services. Guests, representing some of the church bodies with which the ELCIC shares ministries and history, include Bishop Munib Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land; Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada; Rev. Robert Bugbee, president of Lutheran Church-Canada; and Mark Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and president of the Lutheran World Federation. Cuban electoral synod ends in stalemate

The Episcopal Diocese of Cuba held a special electoral synod on June 19 and 20 but after 10 rounds of voting, no new bishop was elected to replace Bishop Miguel Tamayo Zaldívar who has served as interim bishop for six years and plans to retire. The Cuban church has not elected its own bishop for more than 20 years because of internal divisions within the diocese. Read the story.
Bishop Ashdown elected as metropolitan of Rupert's Land

Bishop David Ashdown of the diocese of Keewatin was elected as the metropolitan (archbishop) of the Province of Rupert’s Land at the provincial synod at Holy Cross Church in Calgary on June 11. He replaces Bishop John Clarke, who retired from the position as metropolitan last July. Read the story.
New Westminster diocese court case hearings end

Supreme Court of British Columbia hearings have concluded in a case that will decide whether the Anglican diocese of New Westminister or parishes that have split away from the Anglican Church of Canada own disputed church buildings and resources.
