PWRDF Partner Receives International Recognition
PWRDF recently learned that one of our partners in El Salvador, ADES (Association for Social and Economic Development, Santa Marta), was one of a group of Salvadoran organizations to receive the prestigious Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award. Established by the U.S.-based Institute for Policy Studies, the award is named after the late Chilean diplomat, Orlando Letelier, and IPS staff member, Ronni Karpen Moffit, who were killed in 1976 in Washington D.C. by a car bomb planted by agents of Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet. Since 1978 the award has honoured individuals and organizations throughout the Americas for their work to defend and promote human rights. In its letter to the National Coordination on Mining in El Salvador (of which ADES is a founding member), the IPS recognized "the valour with which it undertook the struggle, in spite of all the challenges, to transform El Salvador into the first country to prohibit gold mining. This is a victory for rural communities and for the environment, helping to prevent the great devastation of open pit mines... the displacement of peasant communities and the enriching of corporations at the expense of the poor."

PWRDF joins other partners in congratulating ADES for its steadfast and persistent work of empowering local communities to defend and promote their human rights. ADES was the partner that made ceramic medallions for our 40th anniversary and are featured in the video "Strength of Many Hands".

Kairos gathers to strengthen and expand ecumenical social justice movement
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
July 6, 2009

Cydney Proctor, a second-year university student in Halifax, had her “first brush with Kairos,” with about 350 other people at the first national gathering of the ecumenical social justice organization in Waterloo, Ont. from June 17-20. One of the aims of the conference was to bring long-term supporters and activists together with people who hadn’t been involved with Kairos before. The result was “awesome,” according to Ms. Proctor, who said she was inspired by meeting so many people who are passionate about a whole spectrum of social justice issues as well as by the key note speakers, such as Inuit activist and Nobel prize nominee Sheila Watt-Cloutier and Christian economist and theologian Ched Myers.  Read the story.

Pope Benedict says relics are those of St. Paul
by Francis X. Rocca
Ecumenical News International
July 2, 2009

Vatican City: The Roman Catholic Church's Year of St. Paul ended with a flourish on June 28, as Pope Benedict XVI announced that scientists had authenticated the first-century saint's earthly remains under a church in Rome. Carbon testing of bone fragments in a sarcophagus beneath the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, along with the presence of incense grains and purple linen laminated with pure gold, "seems to confirm the unanimous and undisputed tradition according to which these are the mortal remains of the Apostle Paul," Benedict said.
