New Maryland's 10-person mission

By Bruce McKenna

In preparation for a mission to Honduras, we at Holy Trinity, New Maryland, offered our five loaves and two fish to God. We are amazed and grateful to God for the way he graciously moved in the lives of so many people so that we might give him all the praise and glory.  Read the story.

From the Bishop's Office

Episcopal Directive regarding the administration of Holy Communion
This temporary directive, effective since Sept. 3 and until revised, enunciates the principles, context and understandings of the sacrament of Holy Communion and focuses on sanitary practices. Directives include:
• Communion will continue to be offered in both kinds, host and wine, from the common chalice;

• Communion in one kind, host only, in no way influences the validity of the Sacrament and the choice is that of the communicant;

• clergy and administrators at Communion should visibly use hand sanitizer at appropriate times;

• intinction(dipping of the host) is firmly discouraged and may be used by the administrator alone, who will dip the host and place it on the communicant's tongue so the host does not come in contact with the communicant's hands.

Appointment

The Rev. Wendy Amos-Binks and Mr. Cecil Symes (ordained in the Baptist tradition) were appointed to ministerial responsibilities in the Parish of Kent for six months, beginning Sept. 6.  Ms. Amos-Binks celerates the Eucharist once a month and performs baptisms. Mr. Symes, with the assistance of layreaders, leads worship on Sundays from the Book of Common Prayer. He also does pastoral work, including home and hospital visits, and officiates at weddings and funerals as they arise.

Post Ordination training
The recently ordained in the diocese will participate in the Post Ordination Training module "Practical Liturgy," on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Christ Church (Parish) Church in Fredericton. The main topics of the day are:

• The Holy Eucharist;

• Holy Baptism; and
• The Deacon in the Liturgy.
Specific content and format will be communicated closer to the event.
Liturgy is more than "services" or mechanical ritual, liturgy is the expression of our life as Anglican Christians. How is the Anglican "it" and the Anglican ethos expressed in our liturgical habits, practices and actions?  What is "sacramental evangelism?"  These are among the questions to be explored.

All clergy in the diocese are invited to attend this training session.
Please advise the Ven. Geoffrey Hall <geoffrey.hall at anglican.nb.ca> as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

Heavenly Humour

The rector was making his parish rounds on a bicycle, when he came upon a boy with a lawn mower for sale.

"How much do you want for the mower?" asked the rector.

"As much money as it takes to buy a bicycle, " said the boy.

The rector, who needed a lawn mower, asked "Would you take my bike in trade for it?"

The boy said he would have to test-ride the bike first, so he took it up the street and back. When he returned he said "Mister, you've got yourself a deal."

They shook on it, then the rector thought he would give the mower a try. He pulled on the rope a few times with no response. He called out to the boy as he was riding away and said "I can't get this mower to start."

The boy turned back to the rector and said, "That's because you have to cuss at it to get it started."

The rector said "I'm a man of God and I do not cuss. In fact, it has been so long since I cussed, I don't even remember how."

The boy replied "Well, you just keep pullin' on that rope and it'll come back to ya."
