From the Bishop's Office

Episcopal Directive regarding the administration of Holy Communion
This temporary directive, effective since Sept. 3 and until revised, enunciates the principles, context and understandings of the sacrament of Holy Communion and focuses on sanitary practices. Directives include:
• Communion will continue to be offered in both kinds, host and wine, from the common chalice;

• Communion in one kind, host only, in no way influences the validity of the Sacrament and the choice is that of the communicant;

• clergy and administrators at Communion should visibly use hand sanitizer at appropriate times;

• intinction(dipping of the host) is firmly discouraged and may be used by the administrator alone, who will dip the host and place it on the communicant's tongue so the host does not come in contact with the communicant's hands.

Post Ordination training

The recently ordained in the diocese will participate in the Post Ordination Training module "Practical Liturgy," on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Christ Church (Parish) Church in Fredericton. The main topics of the day are:

• The Holy Eucharist;

• Holy Baptism; and
• The Deacon in the Liturgy.
Specific content and format will be communicated closer to the event.
Liturgy is more than "services" or mechanical ritual, liturgy is the expression of our life as Anglican Christians. How is the Anglican "it" and the Anglican ethos expressed in our liturgical habits, practices and actions?  What is "sacramental evangelism?"  These are among the questions to be explored.

All clergy in the diocese are invited to attend this training session.
Please advise the Ven. Geoffrey Hall <geoffrey.hall at anglican.nb.ca> as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

Diocesan Stewardship Conference with Bishop Edward Salmon Oct. 16-17
Parish clergy and two lay representatives (one of whom should be a warden) from each parish are urged to attend. Register on-line.

Peace in Burundi strengthened by community development September 9, 2009
by Debra Fieguth

To outsiders, the measure of peace in Burundi might look like a baby step, but to a Burundian family, it’s a giant leap forward. “When a woman today can leave her home and go two kilometres to get water and firewood and come back and no one harms her, for her this is peace,” says Zaida Bastos, African program coordinator for The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund. Sisterhood of St. John the Divine celebrates 125th anniversary
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Sept. 9, 2009
Andrea Scott calls it Toronto’s best-kept secret. In 2005, homeless and wishing to escape, even for a few hours, the hustle and bustle of the streets, Ms. Scott had been referred by an Anglican priest to the convent of the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine (SSJD) located in the quiet, leafy neighbourhood of Cummer, a couple of blocks north of Finch. Heavenly Humour

Passengers on an overseas flight were bounced around by turbulance and terrified by thunder and lightening as they flew through a storm. One particularly frightened young woman, who sat next to a man in a black suit and clerical collar, said with a nervous laugh: "Pardon me, but you're obviously a man of God, can't you do something about this storm?"

The cleric replied, "I'm sorry my dear, but I'm in sales, not management."
