Anglicans asked to imagine hunger at Thanksgiving...then act to help the poor
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Oct. 9, 2009As Canadians gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, Bishop Colin Johnson of the diocese of Toronto is asking them to reflect on the 300,000 people in Ontario who must rely on food banks to survive. “..pause and imagine looking down at a half-empty plate of plain food, [at] a meal that will leave you hungry…,” Bishop Johnson writes in an advertisement that appeared in the Toronto Star on Oct. 8, a few days before Canada’s Thanksgiving holiday. Read the story.
Camp Columbia operations suspended
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
Oc.t 9, 2009
The diocesan council of the diocese of British Columbia voted on Sept. 24 to suspend operations of Camp Columbia on Thetis Island, a small island east of Vancouver Island. The camp had an accumulated deficit of more than $500,000, and the council decided that the diocese could not afford the financial drain on resources any longer. The council said it could not ask parishes, many of which are also facing financial challenges, to pay more to cover the camp’s operational shortfall each year. Read the story.
From the shadow towards the light
Conference on marginalization shakes up assumptions about relating to God and to one another
by Mary Louise Meadow
Anglican Journal
Oc.t 9, 2009
On a bright September Friday in Victoria, B.C., Sara Miles and Paul Fromberg, our sister and brother in Christ from St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, messed up the comfortable order in which many of us relate to God and to one another. Invited by Rev. David Opheim, rector of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church and the parish’s Rainbow Kitchen, they led a social justice awareness conference called Marginalization: From the Shadow Towards the Light. Read the story.
Gathering to tackle national expectations for theological education
by Ali Symons
Anglican Church of Canada
Oct. 9, 2009
If two women—one in Yellowknife, one in Regina—hear the call to be priests in the Anglican Church of Canada, the steps they will take to become ordained are quite different. Although both will wear collars and be "the Rev." in the end, their assessment and education will depend on their diocese's unique program, which could range from an informal mentoring relationship to specific course requirements. Read the story.
Churches need to help wage war on drugs
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Oc.t 8, 2009
Churches should play a major role in getting the “moral message” out about the human toll exacted by the war on drugs on the U.S.-Mexico border. More funds need to be allocated for measures that reduce the demand for drugs, and churches can lend a hand here too, a specialist in border issues has said. Read the story.

A new demographic study has determined that Muslims represent nearly a quarter of the world's current population with nearly two-thirds of them living in Asia, and that Islam is the second largest religion after Christianity.
