The Nicodemus Project: Congregational self-assessment is the first step

By Jim Morell
For the Administration Team of Diocesan Council

Synod 2009 shone a bright light on the difficulties and challenges faced by our church at the parish and diocesan levels. Delegates confirmed the messages of two important reports: we are a church in decline, our situation is very serious and we need to seek God’s will through a process of self-examination. As a result, we are coming to grips with our need for transformational change — and we call the process of achieving that deep and long-lasting change The Nicodemus Project.

Condolences

Canon Jackson was a valued friend of the Diocese of Fredericton as well as our skilled and able stewardship consultant. The Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, noted he died on the eve of the Epiphany and linked the Magi's gift-giving to Canon Jackson's own desire to give good gifts to Christ through his work at the church. Sincere condolences to his wife, Elizabeth, their three sons, and four grandchildren. His funeral was held at 1 o'clock today (Jan. 12) at All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo, Ontario. Erb & Good Family Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.

Visionaries, healers and medicine people
A Voices of Hope Pew Bulletin Story
Our elders tell us of people who were gifted among all beings because they carried two spirits: that of male and female. These individuals were looked upon as a third gender in many cases, and in almost all cultures they were honoured and revered. Two-Spirited People were often the visionaries, the healers and the medicine people, respected as fundamental components of our ancient culture and societies. This is our guiding force, as well as our source of strength. This is the heart of the Two-Spirited People of the First Nations.

PWRDF supported the Two-Spirited People of the First Nations in organizing the Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week following the commemoration of World AIDS Day 2006. The campaign message was that HIV/AIDS does not discriminate; that it affects everyone. The World Health Organization has documented how stigma, shame, guilt, intolerance and discrimination prevent people from getting tested for HIV, which contributes to the spread of the disease. HIV rates among Canada’s Indigenous communities continue to rise at alarming rates. Meaningful prevention that is culturally relevant is more important today than ever. Two-Spirited People of the First Nations is a non-profit social services organization whose membership consist of Indigenous gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Toronto; it’s Canada’s oldest and first Aboriginal-specific AIDS service organization. The 2-Spirited People know that health is more than just the absence of illness; rather, it is a balance of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person’s life.

'We just wish it would all go away'
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Jan. 9, 2010
Chateauguay, Montreal: There is “general pessimism” among bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada about the potential for “any clear resolution” of the divisive issue of sexuality at the church’s upcoming General Synod in Halifax this June. This is one of the many observations recently made by two pastoral visitors from the U.K. who were deputized by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. They were invited to attend the four-day meeting of the House of Bishops last November in Niagara, Ont., at the request of Archbishop Williams. Archbishop Williams is seeking ways to heal divisions among member provinces of the Anglican Communion.  Read the story.

He also worked to cultivate major gifts for parishes, dioceses and the national church. Read the story.

Changing US demographics could make Latinos 'hosts of table'
by Chris Herlinger
Ecumenical News International
Jan. 7, 2010

New York: Roman Catholics in the United States are asking a question that touches on demographics and culture: what will the church look like in the coming years when at least 40 percent, and perhaps even a majority, of U.S. Catholics are Latino? At the very least, "they will not only have a place at the table, they will be the hosts of the table," said Peter Steinfels, a New York Times religion columnist and the co-director of the Fordham Center on Religion and Culture, at a recent forum that examined the impact of Latin Americans on the church and the U.S. religious landscape.  Read the story.

Geneva: Frances S. Smith, a former editor of the Ecumenical Press Service - the predecessor of Ecumenical News International - has died at her home in Claremont, California, aged 87. Move to sideline Christianity in UK after teacher 'fired' says centre
by Trevor Grundy
Ecumenical News International
Jan. 7, 2010

London:  Britain's Christian Legal Centre says it has hired a human rights lawyer to represent Olive Jones, a 54-year old maths teacher who is being investigated by the North Somerset Council after she offered to say prayers in front of a 14-year old student suffering from leukemia. Worshippers at the Carmel Christianity Centre, a Pentecostal group in Bristol, said it will this week pray for the reinstatement of Jones who is the latest British Christian to have faced disciplinary or legal action for expressing their faith in public.  Read the story.

Copenhagen leaves vulnerable 'on their own' says Kenyan professor
by Fredrick Nzwili
Ecumenical News International
Jan. 5, 2010

Nairobi: Vulnerable communities have been left on their own to adapt to climate change or perish, with only God to count on, because of the failure of a United Nations conference in Copenhagen to agree legally-binding commitments, a Kenyan theologian and ecologist has warned. "They should not expect any significant help from the nations most responsible for historical emissions," Professor Jesse Mugambi, who teaches religious studies at the University of Nairobi, told Ecumenical News International on Jan. 4. "This became evidently clear in the political statements made by the heads of delegations at Copenhagen."  Read the story.
