Sunday in Kpando
By Heather Miller
Our first Sunday in Ghana was spent at St Patrick's in Kpando. We arrived there 45 minutes late but everyone was waiting patiently, robed and ready to go. Service started at ten to ten with a long procession of servers, deacons, priests, two bishops and two choirs walking in the side door and on up to the altar. As they walked bells jingled, the servers swung incense back and forth and the choir sang with maracas and drums providing the accompaniment. It was a wondrous beginning for our first service in the Diocese of Ho. Read the story.

Nicodemus Project launches Sunday
The Nicodemus Project will be launched this Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010. A litany and prayers for the regular Sunday service and a bulletin insert with information on this project that was conceived at Synod in 2009, are available for use in your parish. Synod 2009 recognized this diocese requires transformational change in the understanding of our church. In John’s Gospel, Nicodemus’ encounter with Jesus leads him to seek transformation as well. He knows that in order to begin a new life focused on God, he must change his ways. Our diocesan pursuit of transformational change through prayerfully revealed priorities is named in honour of Nicodemus.

Haiti: Clean Water from Filthy
A water purification system, with pipes, filters and pumps that was brought from freezing cold Norway to burning hot Haiti, is providing 10,000 homeless Haitians with crystal clear drinking water. The ACT Alliance has brought in specialist water and sanitation facilities, desperately needed in earthquake-hit Haiti. The "water factory" is based in the Belair neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince. The water coming from these taps is the first clean water these people have had since the earthquake. More equipment has been sent to homeless families in Jacmel, on Haiti's southern coast where the ACT Alliance is distributing tonnes of relief materials including four million water purification tablets, jerrycans, blankets and enough healthcare kits to last 10,000 people three months. The ACT Alliance is also involved in psycho-social treatment of the traumatized population.

New Bishop appointed to Episcopal Church of Cuba
Anglican Journal
Jan. 25, 2010
The Metropolitan Council of Cuba has appointed The Rev. Griselda Delgado del Carpio as Co-adjutor Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Cuba. Delgado was appointed after two special electoral synods held last year failed to elect a successor to Bishop Miguel Tamayo Zaldivar, who plans to retire as interim bishop soon. She was chosen from a pool of candidates who were asked for written responses by the Council, composed of Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori of The Episcopal Church, and Archbishop Errol Brooks, acting primate of The Church in the Province of the West Indies. The Council has overseen the Cuban church since it separated from The Episcopal Church in 1967 because of difficult relations between the two countries’ governments. Read the story.
Episcopal Diocese of Haiti caring for 23,000 quake survivors
By Mary Frances Schjonberg
Episcopal News Service
January 24, 2010
The Episcopal Diocese of Haiti is caring for close to 23,000 Haitians in at least 21 encampments around the earthquake-devastated country. The information came Jan. 23 in a letter from Bishop Jean Zaché Duracin to Episcopal Relief & Development President Robert Radtke and posted here. In the letter, Duracin said that the diocese and the organization are working "hand-in-hand," telling Radtke he has "complete confidence in you and your agency. Please tell our partners, the people of the Episcopal Church, the people of the United States and indeed the people of the world that we in Haiti are immensely grateful for their prayers, their support and their generosity," Duracin wrote. "This is a desperate time in Haiti; we have lost so much. But we still have the most important asset, the people of God, and we are working continuously to take care of them." Read the story.
Anglican housing project in Ottawa gets big boost from Catholic nuns
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
Jan. 23, 2010
A major donation from an order of Roman Catholic nuns has put a diocese of Ottawa ministry much closer to its goal of building a supportive housing facility for 42 women in need. The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Pembroke donated $1 million to Cornerstone’s housing project. Sue Garvey, director of Cornerstone, thanked and praised the Grey Sisters for their ongoing support and generosity toward Cornerstone. The relationship first began when Cornerstone was interested in buying a residence owned by the sisters but could not get enough funding, she said. Since that time, the sisters have given donations regularly and donated to help Cornerstone cope with a crisis in November when a fire damaged one of its facilities, killing one resident. Aid organization says Haiti is best helped by cash donations
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Jan. 21, 2010
The most immediate and useful way to help millions of Haitians affected by the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake is still through cash donations, an aid worker has advised. “Unfortunately a lot of people aren’t keen on giving money. They want to do something more concrete. But in fact, if they really want to help, money is the most useful thing,” said Sarah Wilson, a communicator from Action by Churches Together (ACT) International, a global humanitarian alliance of churches and agencies. “Even here, we’re going to be distributing money in limited quantities to certain people because there is food available to buy, [it’s] just that people don’t have any money.” (Anglican Journal interviewed Wilson in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince via Skype, a software application that allows telephone calls via the Internet.) Encouraged by the success of its advertisements in the Toronto Star, the Anglican diocese of Toronto is getting ready to have more published. The ads, which ran before Thanksgiving and then again before Christmas, urged Canadians to remember the poor, the homeless, and how God’s love manifests. Read the story.
‘Faith and courage in the midst of great tragedy’
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Jan. 18, 2010
“What do we say in Easter?” the Rev. Yves Eugene Joseph asked worshippers who on Sunday, Jan. 17, packed Église de la Nativité, a modest church in Montreal’s North that is home to Canadian Anglicans of Haitian origin. “We say, Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” This, he stressed, “is our faith.” Through tears and sobs, the congregation responded with a chorus of “Amen. Hallelujah!” Read the story.
