Performance Review

The once secret Synod Office season
By Ana Watts
In addition to Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost, the Synod Office calendar has yet another season marked on its calendar — Performance Review. Intended to be as brief and introspective as Advent, it succeeds in the introspection department, but the time required on task often stretches into Epiphany. It is no mean feat to get busy people in the same place at the same time in order to have a private and meaningful conversation.  Read the story.

Uganda's Anglican church wants changes to anti-homosexuality law
by Fredrick Nzwili
Episcopal News Service
Feb. 11, 2010
The Anglican Church of Uganda says it wants to see changes to a proposed law which would jail homosexuals and even execute them in some cases, which many international church and secular leaders have condemned. Still, the church has said there is still a need for a law that would clearly address gay issues in the east African country, and that Ugandan Anglicans remain strongly opposed to the acceptance and promotion of homosexuality. by Matthew Davies
Episcopal News Service
Feb. 11, 2010
The Church of England has said it recognizes and affirms the desire of the Anglican Church in North America to remain in the Anglican family, but it is not yet ready to be in full communion with the breakaway entity. Amended legislation passed Feb. 10 by General Synod, the Church of England's main governing body, said that ACNA's desire required further exploration by the "relevant authorities" in the Anglican Communion. Presiding Bishop says Episcopalians must commit to Haiti's future
by Mary Frances Schjonberg
Episcopal News Service

Feb. 9, 2010
The wider Episcopal Church can most effectively help the earthquake-ravaged Diocese of Haiti by praying, contributing to emergency relief efforts and planning how it will help the diocese achieve the rebuilding priorities that it will eventually set. That is the assessment Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori came away with after visiting Port-au-Prince Feb. 8 to survey the damage wrought by Jan. 12 magnitude 7.0 earthquake. Rowan Williams issues 'profound apology' to gay Christians
by Ruth Gledhill
Religion Correspondent
Times Online
Feb. 9, 2010
The Archbishop of Canterbury issued a “profound apology” to the lesbian and gay Christian community today. In a powerful address to the General Synod, Dr Rowan Williams warned that any schism within the Church would represent a betrayal of God’s mission. But he made clear that he regretted recent rhetoric in which he has sought to mollify the fears of the traditionalist wing of the church. Read the story.

New bishop of Cuba: 'Hers is a theology of hope'
by Marites N. Sison
Anglican Journal
Feb 9, 2010
In a service described as “full of life and energy,” The Rev. Griselda Delgado del Carpio, 55, was consecrated on Feb. 7 as the new co-adjutor Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Cuba. The pews at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Havana were packed as about 400 people – busloads from parishes where Bishop Delgado had served as priest –  gathered for the four-hour service. Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, primate of The Episcopal Church, and Archbishop John Holder, the new primate of the Church of the Province of the West Indies, celebrated the Eucharist as members of the Metropolitan Council of Cuba. (The Council has overseen the Cuban church since it separated from The Episcopal Church in 1967 because of difficult relations between the governments of Cuba and the United States.) Heavenly Humour

There were three bi-vocational clergy having lunch one day. One was an obstetrician, one was a farmer and the third was a lawyer. The topic came around to which of their secular occupations was the best integrated into their vocations.
“Well,” said the obstetrician-priest, “healing is a ministry practiced by Christ himself.”

The two others agreed that yes, indeed, the doctor/minister combination worked very well. “And besides, in Eden, Adam would certainly have assisted at the birth of his children.”
“Of course,” smiled the farmer-clergy, “you remember that God specifically put Adam into the garden to keep it. Tilling the earth is therefore the primary labor of humanity commanded by God.”
“My beloved friends,” said the lawyer. “I think your professions are excellent ‘tent-making ministries.’ But you must agree that my profession, as a lawyer, is most dear to the heart of God. Before Jesus healed – before Eve delivered – before there was a Garden of Eden, God created the world out of chaos. And who creates the chaos. Well, lawyers, of course!
