Conflict Resolution and Assertive Communication workshops

Offered by Achieve Training Centre
Conflict Resolution
: Sometimes stress, personality differences or other precipitating factors can lead to conflict between individuals or within an entire group. Many conflicts would not spiral out of control if people used conflict resolution techniques that are easy to learn and utilize. This workshop will teach participants to understand the dynamics of conflict and be able to respond confidently when faced with difficult situations. Presented in Dartmouth on April 12 and Moncton on April 14.
Assertive Communication: Understanding our communication style and how we interact with others is essential to positive and productive relations. Effective communication requires us not only to be aware of ourselves, but also to be responsive and aware of others. Being assertive in communication is the ability to express positive and negative ideas and feelings in a transparent, welcoming and direct way – to state clearly and without defensiveness what one needs. Participants of this workshop will build an awareness of their communication patterns and learn to deal confidently with people around them. This workshop is fun, practical and highly effective at improving communication awareness and skills. Presented in Dartmouth on April 13 and Moncton on April 15.

‘We have to bite the bullet and move forward,’ says B.C. dean
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
Feb. 25, 2010
St. Saviour's Church is one of 10 Anglican churches in Greater Victoria being recommended for closure in a report released by the diocese of British Columbia. “My first reaction was just a real sense of wanting it all to be over and crawling in a hole and pulling the covers over my head,” says Peter Gibb, the People’s Warden at St. Saviour's Anglican Church in Victoria. That was his feeling when a report from the diocesan transformation team recommended St. Saviour's as one of 13 churches in the diocese of British Columbia to be dis-established and its building sold or leased. The news was not unexpected. In response to dwindling numbers of people in churches, the diocese has been discussing the necessity of such changes for a number of years. Read the story.

Restructuring can be good news, says archdeacon
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
Feb. 25, 2010

When the diocese of British Columbia released its long-awaited transformation plan for the diocese, Bishop James Cowan emphasized that the plan was not merely about responding to declining numbers of people attending church by closing churches and restructuring. The aim is also to focus resources and the energy of Anglicans into new ministries and evangelism. Read the story.

African churches use mobile phone to ring up growth in members
by Fredrick Nzwili
Ecumenical News International
Feb. 22, 2010

Nairobi: A mobile phone suspended on a belt round the waist or from the neck is a common sight among members of church congregations in Africa. Now, church leaders are heaping praise on mobile phones, sometimes called cell phones, because they say the instruments help congregations grow. Mobile phone use increased rapidly in Africa about 10 years ago. At that time, however, some Christians on the continent criticised the phones for being "marks of materialism." Now, that has changed.  Read the story.

Heavenly Humour

Three bi-vocational clergy were having lunch one day. One was an obstetrician, another a farmer and the third a lawyer. The topic came around to which of their secular occupations was best integrated into their vocations.

“Well,” said the obstetrician-priest, “healing is a ministry practiced by Christ himself.” And the two others agreed that yes, indeed, the doctor/minister combination worked very well. “And besides, in Eden, Adam would certainly have assisted at the birth of his children.”

“Of course,” smiled the farmer-clergy, “you remember that God specifically put Adam into the garden to keep it. Tilling the earth is therefore the primary labor of humanity commanded by God.”

“My beloved friends,” said the lawyer. “I think your professions are excellent ‘tent-making ministries.’ But you must agree that my profession, as a lawyer, is most dear to the heart of God. Before Jesus healed – before Eve delivered – before there was a Garden of Eden, God created the world out of chaos. And who creates chaos today? Well, lawyers, of course!”
