Simple machines, effective tools
In the Diocese of Ho a corn mill is a tool for economic development, evangelism, social assistance and a public affirmation of faith.

By Ana Watts

Members of the Diocese of Fredericton delegation to our Companion Diocese of Ho in Ghana last fall were astonished, amused, frightened, excited and inspired by what it saw and heard in the struggling Volta region of west Africa. Before they went there they mulled over some possible plans to support Bishop Matthias Kwabla Medadues-Badohu (hereafter referred to as Bishop Matthias) and his diocese. They thought they might send an administrative assistant or a couple of youth workers to help him carry the load for six months or so. But when they saw the diocese and met its people, they discovered they could best support the diocese with corn mills.  Read the story.

Choir School goes green

With a little help from the parishes
In order to save trees (as well as postage), the Choir School planning team will not mail printed registration forms to junior choristers for the 2010 Choir School session. Junior choristers are encouraged to download the forms, and in order for junior choristers to know they need to download the forms, parishes are asked to include a notice like the following in their bulletins as often as possible between now and June 6:

Registration forms (four pages) for the 53rd Annual Diocesan Choir School — July 4-11 at Rothesay Netherwood School are available for download now! <www.choirschoolsite.com>.  Junior choristers please print, fill in, and send all four pages to the registrar.  Adult choristers need only complete page one, and add page two if appropriate.
It would also be kind of parishes to print a supply of forms to have available to interested choristers who lack Internet access.

Congregational Growth and Development Fund
(A working title)

In response to decisions of Diocesan Synod in 2009, the Parish Support and Development Team is working toward the initiation in a diocesan fund similar to the "Builders For Christ Fund" created by Bishop Edward Salmon in the Dioceseof South Carolina. The fund is intended to encourage parishes, groups of parishes, deaneries or archdeaconries to undertake innovative, risk-taking projects that will lead to spiritual/numerical/financial growth for the making of disciples. The fund will be distributed as grants to groups with plans which meet this criteria. The planning team has identified sound systems, musical instruments, puppet ministry materials, youth pastors, vehicles, Christian education materials, lunch programs for seniors/children, seniors clubs and family events as likely candidates for support, but it wants further input. Are there projects which your parish or a group of parishes might seek to develop if funding were available? Grants will range from a few hundred dollars to several thousands depending upon the response in the diocese. If you have ideas you might wish to see funded in your area please contact Archdeacon David Edwards <david.edwards at anglican.nb.ca>.

Prayer for Clergy College 2010

Prayer for Availability and ability to attend Diocesan Clergy College

O Lord Jesu Christ, who in thy boundless compassion for all humanity felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd; And dost set thy pastors to tend, feed and care for thy flock and to seek out the lost; as thou didst withdraw to quiet places to commune with thy Father and to pray with and teach thy holy Apostles; grant to the pastors of thy Church in this Diocese respite from their daily burden, the care of the churches, and a hearty desire to come apart, to be refreshed and grow in the knowledge and love of thee our Saviour and one another; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. AMEN.

Reflections from Haiti
April 15, 2010

By Naba Gurung, Humanitarian Response Coordinator, PWRDF
From March 23-30, 2010 I visited Haiti on behalf of PWRDF. While there, I met with the ACT (Action by Churches Together) partners who have been working tirelessly since the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12. PWRDF has been working with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti (working along with the Episcopal Relief and Development, USA) and with ACT members Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Haiti and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) in Haiti. The recovery work supported by PWRDF is being led by the community, who are involved in all stages of the work from assessing the situation through prioritizing needs and working to distribute resources. Anglicans in Canada have raised over $2.1 million for relief and redevelopment work in Haiti. Read the story.

General Synod Web News
April 16, 2010
The Anglican Church of Canada is pleased to announce that for the first time in its 117 year history, General Synod is offering religious based organizations and affiliates the opportunity to support its triennial national convention through a variety of unique sponsorship initiatives. "We hope that inviting the support of corporate sponsors for General Synod will have a positive impact on the Church's ability to ensure the sustainability of this gathering for years to come" explains Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. "It also presents a new avenue for Canadian Anglicans, particularly those who own their own businesses, to support this event." Read the story.

"Governance is like weeding a garden," writes David Phillip Jones, chair of the Governance Working Group (GWG), in the latest General Synod web forum post. "It needs to be done, done regularly, and done well." At the national meeting this June, the GWG will propose several changes to the Anglican Church of Canada's governance. On the table will be a new structure for national Indigenous ministry and a smaller Council of General Synod. Read the full article and offer your input.

Anglican “green teams” unite through new network
by Ali Symons
General Synod Web News
April 14, 2010
A toxic treasure hunt was how St. James, in Dundas, Ont., started off its environmental work. A parish environmental committee, or "green team," decided to switch to eco-friendly cleaning products, but first had to root out the old, hazardous materials hiding around the church. "We found stuff from the 30s and 40s that you wouldn't want to touch with a 10-foot pole," said the Rev. Bill Mous, who got his hands dirty that day. The team collected a whole car trunk full of waste, and in later months moved on to other projects: installing energy-efficient windows, hosting an Earth Hour service, setting up a bike rack, and more.
