Synods — Easy as 1, 2, 3 — General, Provincial, Diocesan

by Pat Drummond

In conversation a week or two ago, I mentioned to a friend that I was going to General Synod in Halifax this week. (June 3-11) “Oh, really,” he said, “but why in Halifax? Isn’t Synod usually in New Brunswick?” This led me to think that there was room for an article on our three different synods. Read the story.

Exceptional organ recital at Christ Church (Parish) Church

Gerald Wheeler (a former organist at Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal) and his daughter Jane Wheeler (an accomplished professional actor) will present a concert at Christ Church Parish Church in Fredericton on June 9th at 7 p.m. They will perform a recently composed award winning work by George Akerley titled “A Sweet for Mother Goose.”  It is based on rhymes selected from the Mother Goose collection of nursery rhymes. No pre-existing tunes are used; new music was composed for each rhyme based on the formal structure and character of each to create this duet of organ and the spoken word. The narrator becomes part of the musical texture through musical and dramatic interpretation. Dr. Wheeler will also play a number of popular classical works arranged for organ including Elgar's “Land of Hope and Glory” and Schubert's “Marche Militaire.” Organists Alice Boyd and Peter Waterhouse will play an organ duet arrangement of “The Stars and Stripes Forever." A large screen at the front of the church will show the organist at work on the large, three manual and pedal organ. The concert will last about an hour.

Archbishop calls for more courageous engagement
By Marites N. Sison
May 27
Anglican Journal
It’s time for the Anglican Church of Canada to get innovative about the ways in which it engages the rest of the world, says Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate. Delegates to General Synod 2010 can expect to be “challenged to stop looking inward,” according to Archbishop Hiltz. “We’re focusing on mission,” he told the Anglican Journal. Archbishop Hiltz explained that the church needs to “start looking out to the world in very courageous ways…the Gospel calls us to be the church in the world.” Read the story.

Confessions of a General Synod junkie
By Marites B. Sisson
Anglican Journal
May 27
General Synod 2010 will be her 10th and last as staff, but Margaret Shawyer is already setting her sights on coming back as a volunteer, or better yet, as a delegate. A self-confessed “General Synod junkie,” Shawyer, 64, knows the ins and outs of the triennial meeting of the Anglican Church of Canada’s governing body like nobody else. She began by staffing the information desk at her first General Synod in 1983. Since then she has coordinated the last four meetings, including General Synod 2010 in Halifax. “I love General Synod,” says Shawyer, who will be retiring this December after working for the national church office since 1965. “It’s a great place to work and meet people. I will miss it.”
Still, it’s time to pass the baton, she admits with a laugh. “I don’t want to be, ‘Oh, that old lady over there. Why doesn’t she go?’” Read the story.

A missional Primate?
Anglican Church of Canada
May 26, 2010
What is the Primate's role in the Anglican Church of Canada? Over the past three years, the Primatial Role Task Force explored this question through historical research and consultation with active Anglicans. In the latest General Synod web forum http://www.ministrymatters.ca/settingsail/a-missional-primate-2/post, task force member Norah Bolton explains what they learned about the Primate's role and mission. "There was a strong consensus that Anglicans want their Primate to be prophetic and inspiring," she writes, "able to listen and care, as well as to be visible both within the church and beyond it." 'Ultimately, I had a blast!’
Justice camp a quality learning experience
By Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
May 25, 2010
“Live the change you want to see.” That was the theme of Community Justice Camp hosted this year by the diocese of Niagara in Hamilton, Ont. from May 9 to 14. And according to participants, the event was inspirational and also gave them practical advice on how to live that change. About 80 people from several provinces gathered at McMaster University for the fifth annual justice camp. On the first day they heard from keynote speaker Karri Munn-Venn, a socio-economic policy analyst with the Ottawa-based Citizens for Public Justice, about the ecumenical organization’s federal anti-poverty campaign. Canon Maylanne Maybee, eco-justice co-ordinator for the Partnerships department of Anglican Church of Canada, gave a workshop and led discussion on shifting perceptions away from charity and toward justice. Three levels of giving:

1. giving because you have to (taxes)

2. giving because you should (corporate responsibility / doing my share; what should I give? - don't answer that)

3. giving because you want to, out of thanksgiving. You no longer ask "How much should I give," but "how much can I give?" (It happens somewhere around the 10% level.)

Going from level two to level three there is a psychological breakthrough.

The strongman at a circus squeezed the juice from a lemon between his hands. He then said to the audience, "I will offer $200 to anyone in the audience who can squeeze another drop from this lemon. A thin scholarly looking woman came forward, picked up the lemon, strained hard and managed to get a drop. The strongman was amazed. He paid the woman and asked, "What is the secret of your strength?"

"Practice," the woman answered. "I was the treasurer of an Anglican church for 32 years!
