General Synod 2010 — a positive experience
Reports from New Brunswick Anglicans

Bob Brittain, Lay member, Parish of Lancaster
For me the highlight of General Synod was being part of such a large group of people (350 delegates) who were all enthusiastic about our church. The spirit of the gathering was positive throughout; people were passionate about doing the business of the church. The mood was set by our Primate Archbishop Fred Hiltz whose compassion and grace was evident in the way he addressed us and in the way he welcomed and interacted with our guests. It was obvious that he was fond of them, and they of him. Read more reports.

Parish to host Conference on Congregational Development Conference
Inspired by Bishop Edward Salmon and the Nicodemus project, St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s in Saint John will host a congregational development conference Oct. 29 - 30 with guest speaker and workshop leader the Rev. Chuck Owens, rector of the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, South Carolina. Mr. Owens was recommended by Bishop Salmon who says: “As Father Owens was my right hand man in congregational development in the Diocese of South Carolina, he is a superb proclaimer of the Gospel. He has the ability to empower others.” Parishes throughout the diocese are welcome to participate in this conference. There is no registration fee, however, registration is required by Oct. 22 and a free will offering will be received. Supplementary to the Conference, two mission services will be held on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. For more information, please contact the St. Mary and St. Bartholomew's office at 696-1347.

Provincial Council to meet in September
With Archbishop Claude Miller in the chair, the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada’s Provincial Council gather in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island September 23-26 to focus on mission, in keeping with Genereal Synod's focus on the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission. Dr. Ellie Johnson, the recently retired Director of Partnerships for the Anglican Church of Canada, will offer a series of reflections on the subject. Provincial Council will also continue its discussion around issues of governance in response to General Synod’s invitation to investigate “whether and how the diocesan, provincial and national structures need to be modified to support and enhance mission.” The Provincial Council’s 31 members represent the seven Anglican dioceses of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada: Montreal, Quebec, Fredericton, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Western Newfoundland, Central Newfoundland, and Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Le Tour de PWRDF

Follow the progress of Suzanne Rumsey's bicycle marathon from Halifax (the site of General Synod 2010) to Ste. Anne de Bellevue on the west end of the Island of Montreal, the site of General Synod in 1959 when PWRDF was officially created.

Since leaving Edmundston on Friday morning, I have crossed the border from New Brunswick into Québec, cycled over a mountain range and past Lac Témiscouata to Riviere du Loup, then turned left and travelled along the Fleuve St. Laurent (St. Lawrence River) to St. Jean Port Joli and arrived today in Charny, just across the St. Lawrence from Quebec City -- 339 km in total.  Read more of her blog.

Tanned and triumphant, PWRDF biker returns home
by Ali Symons
Anglican Church of Canada Web News
June 28, 2010
"It was just a wacky idea I dreamed up in my cubicle" said a cheerful Suzanne Rumsey, who returned to work in Toronto after biking 1,600 km from Halifax, N.S. to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que. She pedaled the 18-day tour to raise money for the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF)—not a bad way to start her new job as the fund's public engagement program coordinator. Access to health for Asian Migrant Women

PWRDF.org
June 26, 2010
Migrant workers in Hong Kong face discrimination, marginalization, and greater risk of HIV infection due to their socio-cultural, economic, and political conditions.  Over 225,000 Asian migrant workers reside in Hong Kong, mostly Filipinos and Indonesians.  Many do not have access to health services. St. John’s Anglican Cathedral in Hong Kong has been working for 15 years to provide reproductive health programs for Asian migrant workers.  Read the story.

Hope in “The Most Dangerous City in the World”
PWRDF.org
June 25, 2010

Even before the current violence between drug cartels, police, and the military heated up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico (just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas), human rights abuses in this city of 1.3 million were rampant.  Over 400 women had been murdered in “feminicides”- killing people because they are female.  Since 2008, more than 5000 have been killed in Ciudad Juarez, leading it to be listed as the second most dangerous city in the world by Real Clear World. Camp… not just for kids anymore!
June 24, 2010
“Live the Change you want to see in the World” was the theme of Justice Camp 2010.  80 “campers” gathered at McMaster University to worship, learn and be challenged  to live this prophetic call.  Young and old gathered from across Canada for a week of experiential learning.  Integral to the Justice Camp experience were 3-day immersions that gave each participant a chance to learn about one specific justice issue in more depth by visiting a local project and learning from people working and living with the particular experience of injustice. PWRDF sponsored three “campers” to participate in this year’s Justice Camp.  All claimed it to be a life changing experience.  One of PWRDF’s Global Partners, Edmond Bayisabe spoke about the joy of learning about justice issues in the Canadian context (specifically around Indigenous Issues and the upcoming Truth and Reconciliation Commission) and being able to take these learnings back to Burundi where they are starting their own Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Tales from the Road
Suzanne Rumsey nears the end of her cycling journey for PWRDF
by Leigh Anne Williams
Anglican Journal
June 24, 2010
When Suzanne Rumsey of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) set off from Halifax to ride 1,300 kilometres over an 18-day period to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., she really didn’t know what to expect. Since June 9, she’s put 1,200 km on her bike, Olive, and she admits that physically, it’s been quite a challenge. On the other hand, she told the Journal in an interview en route, the warm welcomes she’s received along the way has made it “a really positive experience.” Read the story.

Heavenly Humour

Diocesan News

During a family visit to the United States, a father took his five-year-old son to several baseball games where The Star-Spangled Banner was sung before the start of each game. The family then attended a church on a Sunday shortly before Independence Day. The congregation sang The Star-Spangled Banner, and after everyone sat down, the little boy shouted, "PLAY BALL!"
