General Synod delegates are busy morning, noon and night
By Ana Watts
Discussing and proposing motions, telling stories of faith and hope, building relationships with Anglicans from all across Canada …
delegates from the Diocese of Fredericton at General Synod in Halifax are engaged and enthusiastic. They are so engaged and so enthusiastic, they even sang Silent Night in June! The sequel to the successful Amazing Grace video project that raised funds for a suicide prevention program for the Council of the North, Silent Night will raise funds for military chaplaincy. Each member of General Synod was asked to donate at least a toonie ($2) to the cause.
Our delegates have been inspired by the bishop of Jerusalem, faced with difficult financial decisions, celebrated 300 years of continuous
Anglican presence and worship in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, embraced a new style of respectful listening and dialogue for the same-sex blessings debate, learned how to “green” Anglican spaces, and gave first reading to a new formula to determine diocesan membership in General Synod, among many, many other things.
Bishops, other clergy delegates (priests and deacons), lay delegates (not ordained) and a young person are sent to General
Synod by each diocese. This time they are Archbishop Claude Miller, the Ven. Geoffrey Hall, the Ven. Vicars Hodge, the Ven. Patricia Drummond and the Ven. David Edwards, Bob Brittain, Shara Golden, Rob Marsh, Ted Quann and Emily Jacobs. Ron Stevenson of Fredericton, the Chancellor of General Synod, is also a voting member.
Stories related to General Synod are linked in the Wider Church section of the June 8, 2010 edition of E News and new stories and videos are posted each day on anglican.ca and AnglicanJournal.com It is also possible to follow General Synod proceedings live on the Anglican Church of Canada home page.
